More About ILGM
ILGM is an international seed bank based in Amsterdam, but they specialize in shipping seeds to the United States and Australia. They actually have a distribution center in California, which is why their shipping to customers in the U.S. is so fast. It was founded in 2012 as a blog dedicated to sharing advice on how to grow marijuana plants successfully. Robert Bergman, ILGM’s founder, has kept that spirit alive, offering plenty of advice and a free e-book on how to grow healthy cannabis plants with big yields.
Since 2012, ILGM has become one of the best-known, most trusted cannabis seed banks. It brings together seeds from marijuana growers around the world. A great benefit of this bank is that you can find a strain that will work for you, whether you’re an experienced grower or just getting started. The selection can almost feel overwhelming, but they have a convenient strain guide to help you figure out which kind is best for you. Their strains include feminized, autoflower, high THC, high CBD, and high yield options.
When you’re choosing a seed bank, one of the most important factors is shipping to the U.S. ILGM is great because they provide a delivery guarantee and ship each order in discreet packaging (intentionally left vague). It’s nice to feel confident when you place an order that it will arrive on your doorstep no matter what.
For all these reasons, many growers have found ILGM to be the best seed bank that ships to the US. If this is your first time buying marijuana seeds online, this is a great place to start.

More About MSNL
In the world of cannabis seed banks, standing the test of time is significant. MSNL has been around for over 20 years because they have high-quality seeds that their customers keep coming back to. Like ILGM, MSNL is based in the Netherlands. They source their seeds in the Netherlands and Holland and ship internationally out of the United Kingdom.
MSNL was founded by a geneticist, and they take a scientific approach to developing their strains. They work with a collection of local breeders to develop their own strains, which they put through their own extensive testing. In part because of this focus on local development, their prices are typically a little lower than other sellers. That means you can get a great deal, especially if you catch the strain you want on sale. The flip side is that you’ll probably pay a little more for shipping to the United States.
MSNL is famous for its stealth shipping option. This will cost you a little extra (£10.95, which comes out to about $15), but for many people, it’s well worth it. They’ll package the seeds inside an unrelated item, guaranteed to fool any nosey parents, roommates, or coworkers.
If you want to try some dependably high-quality strains and can wait a little longer for shipping, MSNL is absolutely worth a try.

More About Crop King Seeds
Unlike the other seed banks on our list, Crop King Seeds is based in Canada. It was founded in 2005 in Canada. They had to temporarily move their business to the United States when it looked like marijuana was going to become permanently illegal in Canada. For a few years, they grew their business in the American Northwest. Then, in 2013 they were able to return to Canada, and they’ve been growing ever since.
Crop King Seeds has a robust and easy to use website, but they also have a large brick and mortar presence. If you ever travel to Canada, you can buy seeds from Crop King Seeds at their own storefronts or at hundreds of retail partners. You might also see Crop King appearing at any marijuana-themed events in North America. Some people really appreciate being able to visit a store in person and speak with real-life employees. If that’s the case, Crop King may be the right choice for you!
Crop King Seeds has one of the widest selections of seeds and regularly introduces new strains. They currently have over 500 different strains available, including autoflower, CBD, and feminized seeds. If you’d like to try growing something different, Crop King is a great place to find a brand new strain.
A major bonus for American customers is the fast shipping. Because the seeds only have to come from Canada, you can expect your shipment to arrive more quickly than an order from Europe or elsewhere. Crop King’s standard shipping takes 2-7 business days, and for a $40 express shipping fee, you can get it in 2-6 business days. They also offer a delivery guarantee. In the unlikely event that your order is seized by customs, they’ll replace it for free. They also guarantee that at least 80% of their seeds will germinate, or they’ll replace them – you guessed it – for free. These guarantees should give you a fair amount of confidence that you’re ordering from a reputable seed bank.
Is It Legal to Buy Marijuana Seeds Online?
Whether it’s legal to buy and grow your own cannabis seeds is a complicated question. Technically, marijuana is an illegal drug in the United States, meaning that according to federal law, it is illegal to buy or grow cannabis seeds. However, in practice, state law determines whether you can cultivate your own weed. States such as California, Alaska, Colorado, and Massachusetts allow people to legally cultivate their own marijuana for recreational use.
This means you can purchase and grow cannabis seeds without worrying. But be aware that all of these states have regulations on how much marijuana you grow, and there may be other limitations as well. Before purchasing cannabis seeds online, you should look up the regulations in your own state. Information you should know includes:
- Is marijuana legal recreationally or only medicinally?
- Do I need a license to grow my own marijuana?
- Do I need to pay fees to grow my own marijuana at home?
- How many plants can I cultivate?
- How many plants can be in flower at once? (yes, there are separate rules on this)
- How many plants are allowed in a single household? (important to know if you and a roommate are each interested in growing your own marijuana)
- Can the plants be grown indoors or outdoors?
- Do I have to hide my plants from public view?
- How much marijuana can I give to another person?
You can look up your state’s marijuana laws on the NORML website. It’s a good idea to check regularly (at least once a year) because laws about marijuana usage and cultivation are often changing.
Will Customs Confiscate My Cannabis Seeds?
According to federal law, cannabis seeds are not allowed to cross state lines. In theory, moving seeds across state lines or internationally could result in criminal charges. In practice, it’s very common for people to order cannabis seeds and have them shipped. There is a chance that U.S. customs will inspect your package and confiscate your seeds. Crop King Seeds, a Canadian seed bank, estimates that about 5% of their shipments into the United States are confiscated.
So what happens if customs confiscates your seed shipment? Will you get in trouble? The answer is: probably not. If your seeds are confiscated, you’ll receive a package with an official letter notifying you of the confiscation instead of the seeds. You shouldn’t expect to face any additional repercussions.
The worst consequence in most cases is the loss of the seeds you ordered. Luckily, there are a few ways around losing your money. Many international cannabis seed banks (including our top seed banks below) offer delivery guarantees. If you receive the dreaded customs letter instead of your seeds, simply contact the company you ordered from. If they have a guarantee, they’ll replace your order. As an additional precaution, you can follow our advice about discreet shipping below.
Tips for Discreet Shipping
Whether you’re concerned about customs or are worried about keeping your growing practices private, there are steps you can take to keep your seed orders discreet.
- Opt for Small and Medium Orders
The larger an order is, the more likely it is to attract attention. And the more you risk losing if your order gets confiscated! If you need a lot of seeds, consider placing multiple small (or medium-sized) orders rather than one large one. You may want to distribute your risk even more by ordering from multiple vendors. You’ll likely pay a bit more in shipping, but if a shipment is confiscated, you won’t lose your entire investment.
- Pay with a Cryptocurrency
One of the benefits of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin is that they’re untraceable. So if you’re concerned about your purchases being traced back to you, check out using bitcoin. Many reputable cannabis seed banks offer bitcoin as a payment method, and some even offer a discount for using it.
- Use Discreet Shipping Options
A number of cannabis seed banks offer special discreet shipping options. Although most websites intentionally leave the details of these options vague, they typically involve hiding the cannabis seeds within other objects, such as DVD cases, pens, or flashlights. That way, even if the package is opened, it looks like something else. This can help ensure that your seeds make it through customs and can also be nice if you live with anyone who has prying eyes. Discreet shipping usually costs a little extra to compensate for the extra time and materials it takes, but it can be worth it. Keeping your growing practices private is the best way to protect your plants and prevent any trouble.
Why Are Most of the Top Seed Banks International?
We know a lot of people prefer to buy from U.S. brands and would love to purchase their seeds from American cannabis seed banks. Unfortunately, there are fewer options for seed banks located within the United States. That’s because of the U.S.’s patchy history with legalized marijuana. The most reputable seed banks are the ones that have been in operation for years, and those companies are located in countries where weed has been legal for a long time. It only makes sense that these great seed banks would need to get started in places where they can sell marijuana seeds legally. Luckily, international shipping means that these seeds are still available to customers in the United States.
Due to the way American law works, you can actually get into more trouble for shipping cannabis seeds between U.S. states then shipping them from out of the country into it. This makes it difficult for American seed banks to operate – they cannot send their seeds to customers in other states, even if marijuana is legal in both states. American growers should also keep this restriction in mind. Although facing legal consequences is rare, you can theoretically get into trouble for sending seeds across state lines. So if you’re buying seeds, keep them to yourself!
Today, there are a growing number of seed banks in the U.S. However, in many states citizens aren’t allowed to buy seeds to grow themselves. Instead, American seed banks sell to commercially-approved growers and manufacturers. If you live in one of the states where marijuana is legal, you may be lucky enough to be able to purchase American cannabis seeds in person from a seed bank or dispensary. Everyone else will simply have to be patient. If the trend of more legalization continues, we can count on more American seed banks opening and gradually developing great strains.
Ordering cannabis seeds from an online seed bank is surprisingly easy and secure. If you’re thinking of starting to grow your own marijuana or are simply looking for a new bank to try, any of our top 3 seed banks that ship to the USA would be a great choice. If you’re just getting started, you may even want to try ordering from a couple of different places so you can try different strains. However, many growers quickly end up with a favorite reputable seed bank they always come back to.
The best news is that buying cannabis seeds online is just the beginning. Before long, you’ll be growing your own plants and enjoying the fruits of your labors.

The Smorgasbord of Medical and Recreational Cannabis Laws in The United States
Before we begin this section, here’s the TLDR version of the essential facts regarding cannabis laws in the united states:
- Cannabis (in all forms) is illegal at the federal level
- Individual states may enact laws that legalize medical or recreational cannabis laws
- Each individual state’s cannabis regulations may differ from one to the other
Laws vary from state to state in terms of how much weed you can possess, what forms of cannabis you can legally buy, who can qualify to purchase it for medical purposes, and how many plants you can grow, should you buy cannabis seeds from a seed bank in the United States.
Examples of What to Expect When Buying Cannabis Seeds from Seed Stores from State to State
For example, in Alaska, you’re allowed to possess up to an ounce of weed and buy cannabis seeds from seed banks. Meanwhile, in Oregon, while you can only carry an ounce while in public, you can have up to eight ounces stashed at home and any number of un-germinated seeds from a seed bank.
Traveling from State to State with Cannabis Seeds
Should you travel from state to state within the United States, check to determine what the individual laws are where you’ll be staying. In states with legal weed, it’s legal to drive around with cannabis seeds that you’ve purchased from a local or online seed bank as long as they’re in their original packaging.
What You Should Never Do While Traveling with Cannabis Seeds or Flowers
It is never legal to drive while under the influence of marijuana. If you do and get caught, you’re going to have a bad time.
It’s also illegal to take marijuana flowers or cannabis seeds over state lines (even into another weed-friendly state). As individual state laws are undergoing a lot of changes where cannabis is concerned, do a bit of reading on the specifics of wherever you’re planning to travel to see if there have been any updates before you go.
Cannabis Products and Cannabis Seeds Are Always Illegal at the Federal Level — for Now
However, it’s important to remember that any individual state law may change; federal cannabis policy in the U.S. remains unaffected for the time being. Under the Federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana was classified as a Schedule I drug, placing it among harder drugs such as cocaine and heroin. With the enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and products derived from it were no longer classified as Schedule I substances.
James M. Cole, the Deputy Attorney General under former U.S. President Barack Obama, issued a memorandum in 2013 stating that the Justice Department would not focus on enforcement in states that had “legalized marijuana in some form…” This took some of the pressure off of dispensaries (and their clientele) in states with legal cannabis. In 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions (who was appointed by President Donald Trump) rescinded the memo, creating an uproar in the cannabis community. Fortunately, the Trump Justice Department did not take action to enforce federal cannabis laws, allowing the cannabis industry to continue operating in states that had legalized it.
Buying & Growing Cannabis Seeds Recreationally: Differences Within the USA
Depending on where you go in the United States, you will find different laws on weed cultivation and buying cannabis seeds from seed banks in 2022. At the federal level, buying cannabis seeds is illegal. It’s also illegal to buy them if you live in a state where possessing and growing your own weed isn’t legal.
In states with legalized cannabis, just as with possessing and using weed, laws governing growing and buying cannabis seeds differ from state to state. Under D.C. law, for example, an adult (21 years and older) can cultivate up to six marijuana plants (with a maximum of twelve plants to a household) in one location for recreational purposes. Only three plants per person may be mature at one time. Also, you can transfer up to one ounce of weed as an adult to another adult, but marijuana sales are still illegal there. So gift away if you live in D.C., but don’t allow any money to change hands!
Meanwhile, in Oregon, you can only grow up to four plants from seed for recreational reasons. Also, to cultivate at home, you must pay fees, and the marijuana odor must be controlled in a manner as such that the public does not notice it. Selling cannabis without a license is forbidden there, as is the case in most states with legalized pot.
In Alaska, personal cannabis cultivation from seed is restricted to six plants, but only three of them can be flowering at one time. Transfer limits are one ounce, which is the same as in D.C. As you can see, it’s important to know before you grow!
Legal Analysis: Buying Medical Marijuana Seeds in The US from Seed Banks in 2022
For patients, knowing medical marijuana seed laws is important so that you stay compliant. Possession limits vary by state, so be sure to research laws in your current location in 2022 to understand how many cannabis seeds to buy from a local or online seed bank.
Here are a few examples:
In New Jersey, where the law governing medical cannabis was passed in 2010, patients can legally germinate up to six cannabis seeds and possess three ounces of usable weed for medicinal use in any given 30 day period.
However, go to Montana, and you can germinate four cannabis seeds and possess five ounces total in a month. The limits are different, yet again, in Delaware; the legal possession limit for medical marijuana patients is six usable ounces. The laws differ still in New Hampshire, where you can possess only two ounces of usable marijuana for medical purposes for ten days.
In other US states, you can legally possess a certain number of plants for medical use; though be aware that not all states allow for the home-growing from cannabis seeds. In New Mexico, you can legally have up to 16 plants, with up to four of them being mature at one time. Go to Vermont, though, and you will see this number cut down to six, with only two flowering at one time.
These examples show that you need to be aware of the legal limits regarding growing cannabis seeds in the state where you reside, to ensure you stay on the right side of the law. Moving between states means you must be cognizant of the local laws and recognize that laws can change quickly.

Until Federal Prohibition is Lifted, Buying Cannabis Seeds is Illegal
Let’s set the record straight. As of now, you can’t buy cannabis seeds legally. That’s even true in states that have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use. Until Federal prohibition is lifted, the specter of national anti-cannabis law hovers over every single cannabis transaction. It’s just that some cannabis transactions are more likely to be prosecuted by the Feds than others.
So when a friend of mine told me that her favorite Colorado dispensary purchased its cannabis seeds from Florida, I was perplexed. Large inter-state cannabis exchanges are exactly the kind of transactions that would get the wrong kind of attention. Sure, cannabis is legal for adult personal use in Colorado and for medicinal use in Florida, but it remains illegal at the national level. That means that the export of cannabis seeds from one state to another, regardless of each state’s cannabis laws, can result in federal criminal prosecution.
Actually, that means that any transaction involving cannabis is technically illegal as far as the US Drug Enforcement Administration is concerned. There was a time when the Federal government announced that enforcing cannabis laws in cannabis-legal states would not be a priority. Then former Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded that statement making it clear that enforcing prohibition was still at the top of the DEA’s agenda. Even though Sessions is gone, it isn’t clear that the new AG won’t feel the same way that Sessions felt about weed.
For Now, It’s Probably Okay to Buy In-State Cannabis Seeds.
Despite this state vs. Federal government kerfuffle, you’re probably safe to buy cannabis seeds from a source located in your town or state if you abide by your state and local government’s regulations. But state laws vary (and some municipalities have even stricter rules than their states do) so don’t make any assumptions. Check out the rules published by your state’s cannabis regulators.
You have a few legal options if you’re obtaining your cannabis seeds locally.
Dispensary. This is the safest option, but it is also the most limited. Dispensaries do sell cannabis seeds, but you’re likely to only have a few options to peruse since they have an array of products other than seeds to get off their shelves.
Friend. If your buddy has been growing cannabis and keeping their seeds, ask them if they’ll donate a batch to you. Keep in mind that it is illegal for them to actually sell the seeds to you unless they have a cannabis retail license. You’ll also want to make sure that your state and municipality allows this kind of exchange.
Cannabis festival. Lots of vendors at these kinds of events sell cannabis seeds for publicity and to make some fast cash. If you want to have fun, check out a huge variety of producers, and possibly bag some free goodies, definitely check out a cannabis festival.
Marijuana farmers market. Find out if the local producers come together to sell their cannabis seeds. Make sure that the event is registered with the local government, though.
Buying Cannabis Seeds From Out of State Can Get You in Trouble.
Say you live in a state that has legalized cannabis, but you want to buy cannabis seeds online through an out of state dealer who produces in a state/country that has also legalized cannabis. Is this lawful? The answer is, definitely not. Yes, that is a very popular way of buying cannabis seeds, and it’s one of the best ways of getting high-quality cannabis seeds from a seed bank. Vendors justify these online sales by claiming that they are selling the seeds for novelty purposes rather than for cultivation. Also, it’s tough for the feds to actually intercept online transactions because that kind of enforcement is expensive, and it is rare that the average consumer is purchasing enough cannabis seeds for it to really be worth it.
Even so, inter-state activity is under fed jurisdiction, so buying cannabis seeds from out of state online is indisputably subject to federal prosecution. It is illegal to transport cannabis from one state to another through mail, so there isn’t even a legal recourse through which to receive an out of state purchase.
Let’s try another scenario. You just flew to Colorado for a weekend getaway and bought cannabis seeds you want to take home with you so that you can start your own grow. You live in Washington state. Is this a legit plan? Sorry, but no. It is illegal to carry cannabis on an airplane . The situation isn’t better if you drove because it is also illegal to carry cannabis across state lines. States and the Feds are on the same page there—state laws prohibit their residents from taking weed over their borders.
Realistically, people break all of these rules for a variety of reasons. They’re frustrating. They’re counterintuitive. Folks just don’t even know they are the rules because of how silly they are. Even so, they are the rules, and it won’t be pretty if you get caught breaking them. The minimum penalty for a first offense includes a prison sentence of up to 5 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Here’s the tea. If your cannabis purchase requires the seeds (or any cannabis product) to cross state lines, you’re breaking an outdated and ineffective law that, unlike a local purchase, is likely to be prioritized by the feds. If you buy your cannabis seeds from a local licensed vendor, however, you’re at least abiding by your state’s laws, and it is highly unlikely that you will have to deal with the US DEA.
