D.C. cannabis seed give-away

Would-be cannabis growers in Washington D.C. today are getting a second opportunity to take home free seeds.

Following a highly successful give-away in Adams Morgan on Thursday, Saturday’s giveaway is taking place at the D.C. Cannabis Campaign offices, 2448 Massachusetts Avenue, Washington D.C. It starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m.

Hundreds of District of Columbia residents lined up for the first “seed share” event.

Possession of cannabis became legal in the District in February after voters approved an initiative last fall. While buying or selling the plant is still not covered, residents are free to possess up to two ounces of dried buds. The limit on growing is 12 plants at a time. Giving away plants, buds or seeds is legal under the new law.

According to the Washington Post, D.C. police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump offered a short comment went asked about the event: “Seed sharing is not prohibited.”

Home growing was intended by the ballot measure, known as Initiative 71, which voters approved in November.

The campaign staff, on its website, says the “seed share” events are meant to help people “enjoy the freedoms” of the new law.

You must be 21 years old or older, and I.D.s will be checked at the door.

On Thursday, as many as 2,000 people lined up for what was the first wide-open marijuana seed give=aways ever held in the nation.

The line for the marijuana “seed share” at the Libertine bar and restaurant snaked around the block near the Adams Morgan building where it was held. The line included people of many ages and ethnic backgrounds and from all corners of the city, the Washington Post reported.
